Folic acid lowers risk of language delay

Starting folic acid supplementation around the time of conception may decrease the likelihood of severe language delay when the child is 3 years old. Children born to women who began taking the supplements from four weeks before conception to eight weeks after conception were 45% less likely to have severe language delay at 3 years, according to a study in the Oct. 12 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
