A study in the Archives of General Psychiatry shows a significant increase in polypharmacy involving antidepressant and antipsychotic medications. Visits in which 2 or more medications were prescribed increased from 42.6% in 1996-1997 to 59.8% in 2005-2006, and those in which at least 3 medications were prescribed increased from 16.9% to 33.2%. Although some of the prescribed combinations are supported by clinical trials, many are of unproven efficacy, potentially putting patients at heightened risk for drug-drug interactions with unclear clinical benefits.
