Choline is the precursor to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Loss of cholinergic neurons is associated with impaired cognitive function, particularly memory loss and Alzheimer disease (AD). A study in last week's American Journal of Clinical Nutrition investigated 1391 dementia-subjects with the mean-age of 60. Participants underwent neuropsychological evaluation and brain MRI at exam before and after the study. Higher concurrent choline intake was related to better cognitive performance.
Steve - aside from dietary-derived choline, recent data on supplemental Citicoline (a precursor to choline), looks very promising.
